Lenovo ThinkPad X201 Review

Like many business laptops, the X201 has a 12.1in, 16:10 aspect ratio screen, rather than the more common 16:9 found on consumer laptops. Viewing angles of the matte (kudos!) display were also surprisingly good when we looked at it from all sides and flipped the screen around into slate mode. The screen is bright and crisp, though default font sizes in some apps and Web sites are a touch small on a panel this size.

Each of the new ThinkPad X201-series notebooks we have in for review offers the same keyboard that was previously seen on the X200. The chunky letter keys have the excellent tactile feel and the feedback we've grown accustomed to with ThinkPads. The keyboard is protected against fluids and thus prevents the keyboard from being damaged in the case of a spill. The caption of the keys has a strong contrast and a fat format, which allows for good recognition even the lighting is bad. Its touch pad has a slick, accurate surface and is easy to use. The X201’s touchpad had an excellent response time with no noticeable lag and each axis offered the same acceleration rate to prevent unwanted ovals.

Performance has always been a trademark of the ThinkPad X-Series. The laptop’s 2.53-GHz Core i5 540M CPU and its 7,200-rpm Hitachi hard drive allowed it to offer strong performance.  The X201 had a 2-second advantage over the Sony Z116GXS in video encoding tests, since it has the higher-clocking processor.
