Lenovo ThinkPad W520 Review

With its 2.5-GHz quad-core Intel 2nd Gen Core i7-2920XM CPU, Nvidia Quadro 2000M graphics card with Optimus graphics switching, 8GB of RAM, and 500GB 7,200-rpm hard drive, the notebook offers blistering performance that should satisfy the most demanding users and businesses. With its nine-cell battery, the ThinkPad W520 lasted an amazing 9 hours and 5 minutes on the LAPTOP Battery Test, which involves continuous surfing over Wi-Fi.

The design of the notebook is very familiar, and the solid black chassis looks tough and robust. From the looks of it, the outer build of the W520 is about the same as the previous generation workstation model, the W510.  At 14.7 x 9.7 x 1.4 inches and 6.2 pounds, the ThinkPad W520 isn't the thinnest or lightest 15.6-inch laptop on the market, but, considering thelaptops' heavy duty components, it's surprisingly portable.  The Lenovo ThinkPad W520 offers an impressive, extensive span of ports, include two USB SuperSpeed 3.0, one USB 2.0, one USB 2.0/eSATA, DisplayPort out, FireWire 400, VGA, ExpressCard/34, SDHC-card reader, and a headset combo jack.

The ThinkPad W520's has a great display. It has a FHD 1920 x 1080 resolution, LED backlit, matte screen display with a color gamut of 95% and an aspect ratio of 16:9. The viewing angles are excellent and a matte finish means there's no glare or reflectivity from surrounding light sources. Viewing angles on this 1080P display are above average with colors staying true and accurate even as you tilt the screen back or move side to side.

The ThinkPad W520 features the same industry-leading keyboard design we've seen on any number of ThinkPads. . It’s very comfortable to type with and does not make a much sound. Each key has a soft matte finish, which gives a small amount of traction and reduces fingerprints compared to more glossy designs. The touchpad measures 3 inches wide by 1.8 inches tall, located slightly left of center. The ThinkPad UltraNav and Synaptics multi-touch touchpad is quite responsive and is large enough for regular usage.

The notebook has a lot to offer for the mobile road warrior including features above and beyond what's available on the T-series notebooks. The Lenovo ThinkPad W520 provides great all-over performance with its quad-core i7 processor, NVIDIA Quadro 2000M graphics, and 8GB DDR3 RAM.
