Lenovo ThinkPad T420 Review
The ThinkPad T420 follows the classic ThinkPad aesthetic business users have come to know and love over the years. The plastics are of good quality and don't rattle when tapped by a fingernail. You get a matte black chassis, squarish edges, metal hinges, and subtle status lights. It feels very well built and it doesn't make any unnecessary creaks or squeaks when you handle it. The laptop weighs in at 4.8lbs without the power adapter, when you add in the weight of the power adapter it’s about 5.5lbs total carry weight.
It is available in two resolutions: 720p (1366x768) and 900p (1600x900). The 230-nit, 14.1-inch matte display provided sharp images and plenty of desktop real estate thanks to its optional 1600 x 900 panel. Viewing angles are typical for such business machines – fine horizontally but less so on the vertical. The brightness is very good, it’s more than bright enough at the highest setting to use in any type of indoor setting. It is not bright enough to use outdoors in the sun, you need a specialized notebook to do that. A DVD-RW burner comes standard, but there's no Blu-ray option to show off the screen to best effect.
The ThinkPad T420’s keyboard features 7 rows with a full range of keys, even rarely used ones such as scroll lock and pause. Its keys have precisely the right amount of travel to allow time for your finger muscles to realize a key is fully depressed; this is essential for fast and accurate typing. The keyboard is very firm and no sag can be found.
The number of ports offered on the T420 is excellent. It has 4 USB 2.0 ports, VGA monitor out port, Gigabit Ethernet LAN port, DisplayPort, headphone/microphone port, ExpressCard 34mm slot, 4-in-1 media card reader, IEEE-1394 (FireWire) port and power jack.
