 Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E420s Review

The laptop comes with Intel's 2.3GHz Core i5-2410M CPU, which has pretty good integrated graphics — good enough for DVDs and web-surfing. If this setup doesn't make the laptop as powerful as a mobile workstation, it has plenty of power for most business software.  Inside the chassis spins a 320GB 7,200rpm hard drive, which provides fast read/write speeds but is otherwise par for the course. The ThinkPad Edge E420s's Intel HD Graphics 3000 chip is good enough to play back HD video and perform most business tasks. The portable package includes a DVD-RW slot loading drive and includes a fingerprint reader for security. At 4.4 pounds and 13.7 x 9.3 x 1.2-inches, the ThinkPad Edge E420s is one of the most portable 14-inch notebooks on the market.

The 14-inch display is covered with edge-to-edge glass, and the 1,366-by-768 resolution gives you the ability to watch videos in crisp 720p HD. The E420s delivers wide side-to-side viewing angles which allow you to share the screen with a coworker quite easily. The ThinkPad E420s's Intel HD Graphics 3000 chip allowed it to handle any video we threw at it with great aplomb.

The full-size keyboard is in the island style, but uses scalloped rather than square keys to give the keyboard a distinctive look and feel. Key travel is good and spacing is plentiful thanks to the island style layout. If we could make two changes we would ask for more curvature of the keys and backlighting. The keys have a pleasant size of 16x16 millimeters and fast typists will quickly get used to the key field. Although the keyboard is not backlit, the E420s has a "Think light" which shines down on the keyboard from above the display. The Edge E420s' 3.7 x 2.4-inch touchpad provides comfortable, accurate navigation around the desktop.

The ThinkPad Edge E420s has two USB ports, HDMI and a combo headset/mic jack, an Ethernet connection, eSATA/USB port, and VGA out, an SD Card reader and a slot-loading DVD drive. The laptop's Intel WiFi Link 1000 802.11n radio provided below-average transfer rates of 23.3 Mbps and 15 Mbps at distances of 15 and 50 feet from our router.

The laptop makes a great travel companion thanks to its 6+ hour battery life, ~ 4 lb. weight, and one-inch thin chassis. The keyboard offers an amazing typing experience, the battery lasts long enough to get most users through the day and the processor isn’t a slouch.
